Innovation happens only when an idea is implemented to create an impact. Now the sources and process of implementing the ideas can be various. Two terms have to be differentiated clearly while defining process of implementing the ideas; one being ad hoc (jugaad) innovation and other the systematic one.
Now what is the relevance of differentiating the process rather than focusing on defining the innovation in particular? So, here comes the reason for that; when innovation happens as a result of ad hoc implementation of idea, the chances of re occurrence of such events reduces. Where as if the systematic innovation is cultivated within, it regularizes the nurturing and implementing process of the ideas, like Kaizen,Continual improvement concepts.
While talking about process, various myths revolve around innovative idea generation part of it. Most commonly found thoughts are – If I am creative, then only I can innovate! Or someone asking ‘at what stage of innovation are you?’, as if the process is linear! It’s highly risky to innovate! It is not about innovating step by step, all ideas (small, patentable, new product or new business) flow through a funnel.
Managing the innovation funnel will involve openness to ideas and inviting experimentations to nurture the ideas. To have a practical insight you can use one of the tools given in the book, “Think of one change that you embraced in the last one year. Was there resistance to that change? What made you overcome it?” It will surely help in understanding the key aspects of managing the innovation funnel.
