How To Overcome Higher Educational Challenges in India? A Message By Our Vice-President.

Issues of access, equity and quality are hampering the growth of the Indian education sector.

India has world’s second largest population, more than 50% of which is below 35 years of age. This country has the potential to become a hub of trained workforce provided its “demographic dividend” is given the right education and training.

Access to quality education is the foundation of innovation and entrepreneurship development that can fuel growth and prosperity of individuals and that of a nation.


Country’s Education Sector should work towards 3 major areas:

  • Improving access to good quality education.
  • All sections of society must be offered equal learning opportunities.
  • Focusing on outcome-based learning in education and bolstering the ties with industry to link education with industry.

Education system must transform! As huge gap exists between the supply of skilled manpower and its demand in the labour market. Modern-day education system churns out students who are ONLY literate and unfortunately unemployable.

According to Industry reports supported by NASSCOM, only 25% of technical graduates and about 15% of other graduates are considered employable by IT/ITES industry.

There was another survey conducted on 800 MBA students across different cities in India which revealed that only 23% of them were considered employable.

There is now an immediate need for moving from ‘conventional model’ of education to a ‘learner-centered’ model of education.

Following points can be considered by Educational Institutions to improve ‘Employable qualities’ of their students:

  • Indian higher education institutions in collaboration with the industries must identify and impart relevant skills among the young graduates to make them job-ready
  • Domestic institutions must seek collaboration with foreign institutions, especially in areas of engineering, management and medical, to enhance their value.
  • Introduction of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems can make a significant difference in improving the quality of education.
  • Promoting open and distance learning and online courses is felt necessary as conventional education alone can’t meet the needs and aspirations of higher education.
  • Customized learning modules through online course can be offered to Indian learners who lack skills required by the industries.

Besides imparting skills to learners, it is also important to introduce vocational education into mainstream higher education. Policies mentioned under National Skills Qualification Framework must be adopted and followed religiously to promote vocational education among the youth.

It would ensure success of Skill India initiative which aims to train and skill 500 million youth in the next 7 years.

The technologically skilled workforce trained under Skill India Campaign will be essential for the success of the flagship Make in India campaign, which has been launched to boost the economy of the country by inviting global companies to invest in the Indian market.

  1. True sir. Moreover, it will only happen when all the stakeholders of the field are actively involved. I had not seen any other institution management who is similarly passionate as the Parul University management. Active top level management stimulates teaching-learning process across all levels. Such active participation from other management of government and self-financed institutes are needed to achieve overall goal of Make in India and Digital India.

  2. Great futuristic attitude Sir. Education should be skill centered. Specifically our Ayurved. Practice oriented & Evidence oriented teaching will definitely increase confidence of Ayurved students to serve society through this Great Science, Ayurved.

  3. True Sir, the time horizon is expecting even more-

    As One of the stakeholder, I also feel:

    a) The Resources Imparting Skill Training and Educating the Young India should also be encouraged to engage oneself to learn new avenues emerging in their respective areas. Keeping oneself in pace with what is also expected out of us( Academicians) shall also add value to the Education.
    b) Adopting the Technological change along with the Traditional method ( As Traditional method shall ensure the EQ desired )- An Ethnic blend of Teaching shall ensure the desired outcome.
    c) It should be taught to all:- “Accept the Failure at times to rise again” ( It is something that can never be avoided- precautions can always be taken, but analysing WHY it happened?, is also necessary) should be taught and practised as WITH LOTS OF EXPECTATIONS AROUND shall also create a fatigue and further leads to LOSS of Intangible Assets ( Skilled Manpower with the Employer/ Institution)
