There was once a potter who was blind from the point of his birth. Even though he was blind, he would still move his hands in such a way that would turn clay into the most beautiful sculptures. Out of surprise, one customer asked him how he was able to make all these beautiful creations while he is blind. He simply responded and said, “because my eyes cannot see, my hands have become disciplined”.
You see the creations that he made did not come from what he saw with his eyes, but they came from a deep sense of discipline that was in his mind. A kind of discipline that was carried on to his hands, controlling the movements of each and every single hand muscle, to create these glorious sculptures.
This is the beauty of discipline, once you practise it, it gives you a deep sense of self-control. So much that you will not be controlled by the hardships, or the trials, or any situations surrounding you, but you will always remain the one in control. Along the journey of life there will be obstacles which will try and push you away from your focus, but when your mind is disciplined you will be able to maintain the focus throughout the journey.
The most amazing example of discipline is what Ramadan teaches to all the Muslims as well as to all of us. I see Ramadan as a process of moulding your mind and body into the perfect sculpture you were meant to become. A kind of grooming that makes a person to stop being dependant on the things of the world, but to depend on the unique elements within himself. You see the potter did not create from what he saw in the world but he created from what he saw in himself. It is this discipline that comes from fasting throughout Ramadan that makes the person realise the true potential within themselves and use that potential to make the world a better place.
At Parul University our desire is to impart discipline to the students. The reason for this is quite simple. You see once you are taught punctuality in the classroom, you will be punctual in every part of your life. Once we teach our students to have a full attendance at lectures, it goes on to prepare them in such a way that they will not miss a single day of work in their career. This self-discipline our students get to learn is a quality which will be of great help throughout all their life, be it in India, Africa, America or any part of the world.
Above all discipline is a quality that comes with determination and regular practice. The more you do it, the more you become the master of it.
